Building your website from scratch

Before building your website you need to make sure it is secure.

Building your website from scratch doesn't have to be a chore even when you are technically challenged.

Maybe you always thought it was too hard, that you would need to know programming and learn design.

There are hundreds of different website building platforms and website builders around the market.
WordPress, Wix, Joomla, Drupal… Just to name a few.

You can also code your website from scratch, but I wouldn’t recommend it on mainly two reasons:

  • It just takes too much time (seriously)
  • Your end result will be mediocre at its best…

But which one should you choose? I recommend WordPress.

WordPress for your business

Ok, Luc....WordPress for my business website? Yes!

WordPress is an online, open-source website creation tool written in PHP. But in non-geek speak, it's probably the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system (or CMS) in existence today.

WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.

Considering that the number of total active websites is estimated at over 1.3 billion according to a survey published by Netcraft, that means that around 455,000,000 websites are using WordPress right now, which means that around 20% of all self-hosted websites use WordPress, which is still huge.

Another of WordPress’s major strengths is that it’s easy to use and can be installed in 5 minutes or less.

Before you can start building on your website

In order to set up your WordPress (or any other type of website), you’re going to need two things:

Web Hosting (a service that connects your site to the internet) and a domain name (a web address like YourSiteName.com)

You need professional web hosting

Without web hosting, your website will not be visible on the Internet...

Web hosting is provided by a web hosting company that owns and maintains many servers and allows customers to essentially rent space on them. You pay the web hosting provider for that space and, in return, they keep your website up and running.

Choosing your domain name

Choosing the right domain name for your website is crucial for your success.

While it can be tempting to come up with clever blog names using new extensions, .com is still the most established and credible domain name extension.

Many users, especially those who aren’t as tech-savvy as me, will automatically type “.com” at the end of every domain without thinking about it.

I recommend keeping your domain name under 15 characters. Longer domains are harder for your users to remember.

Currently, there are more than 360 million registered domain names. This leads to many people saying that all good domains are already taken.

Searching for individual domain names manually can be very time-consuming.

This is where domain name generators come in. These free tools automatically search for your defined keywords to find hundreds of clever domain name ideas. Do check if you did not make any spelling mistakes as that looks silly and unprofessional.

My thoughts

Without web hosting and a domain name, your website will NOT exist.

An entrepreneur’s focus should be on their business; they do not want to have to solve endless website problems.

When you are technically challenged when it comes to building your website; there is a perfect solution for that: WordPress.

If you’re looking to build a serious business online, you must host your website on a professional web hosting provider to maintain full ownership and control of it. The good news is that these days, with tons of competition, it's not expensive to host your own site.

All the best,

Luc
